Intra-Familial Homicide

In 2016, AVP was 1 of 7 organizations nationally awarded a grant from the United States Department of Justice’s Office of Victims of Crime to serve as a model for newly developed protocols, materials, and best practices for responding to complex homicides. The Intra-Familial Homicide (IFH) Initiative at AVP explored ways to improve Philadelphia’s systemic responses for families of homicide victims. The IFH team worked to improve service provision across the City in the following ways:

  • Conducted survivor-centered research with survivors of IFH and service providers to identify gaps and best practices;
  • Increased collaboration and coordination of services across city and community agencies including the Medical Examiner’s Office, District Attorney’s Office, Philadelphia Homicide Unit, Victim Service Agencies, and more;
  • Coordinated training from local and national experts for multi-disciplinary providers on issues related to homicide and survivors, and evidence-based practices for service provision;
  • Developed, purchased, and disseminated resources that provide families in the aftermath of homicide with the information they need.
